Techstars Startup Weekend Social Innovation will be held from 23rd to 25th July at iHiT Kenya Innovation Hub in Kilimani, Nairobi. The goal of the Startup Weekend is to create an environment where passionate, driven, and like-minded people can come together with ideas to solve some of their community’s pressing social and economic
problems through creative inclusive innovative solutions.

Startup Weekend is a flagship program by Techstars, an American-founded seed accelerator that has accepted more than 2,500 companies and has a combined market capitalization of more than 200B USD. The model seeks to support participants to move from innovation to entrepreneur in 54 hours.

The event is open to anyone(Age 18 -40), such as designers, students, business specialists, developers, engineers, and doctors, and not only targeting those in the technology space, but those with an innovative mind who are keen to learn and share with others.

Over the course of the in-person social innovation weekend, participants will pitch various ideas and form teams around them. With the help of mentors and coaches, the teams will learn how to apply leading methodologies to refine their ideas into a prototype. During the final session of the Techstars Startup Weekend, teams will have five minutes to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges and a winner is selected.

“Startup Weekend is a global event that will afford Kenyans a chance to build on for one to put their ideas, get useful feedback and mentorship on how to a out there, thrashing through it and implement a minimum viable product,” said Favour Ruhui, one of the organisers of the event.

In order to promote Diversity and Inclusion during the three-day event, Techstars Startup Weekend in Nairobi is partnering with Light for the World, an disability inclusive development organisation whose mission is to support inclusive employment, entrepreneurship and work opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Light for the World will not only be a key sponsor to the event but will also build the capacity of the mentors, judges and organising team to best support participants with and without disabilities on disability inclusive innovation. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to sign up and to participate during the 3 day event.

“Diversity and Inclusion speaks to Techstars’ vision to create a global entrepreneurial network that reflects the diversity we see in the world and making innovation accessible to anyone, anywhere,” said Jesse Muraya, an organiser and one of the sponsors of the event.

Tickets to the three-day event, at a cost of KSHs 1,500, are available on the registration link here:
